The Office of Student Life employs Learning Specialists to assist students with every aspect of the curriculum. Medical students may seek academic assistance for a variety of reasons. Our goal is to support medical students as they adapt their study skills, test-taking strategies, and personal habits to the demands of the Lead.Serve.Inspire (LSI) medical curriculum. Any medical student in the College of Medicine may access services at no cost to them, and referrals are not needed.
If you are seeking information about admission requirements, please contact the Admissions Office. The Office of Student Life provides the following learning support resources:
Academic Counseling
Whether just entering medical school or planning to graduate soon, there are often challenges of adjusting to or keeping up with a rigorous curriculum. Learning Specialists are available to meet with medical students individually or in small groups to help prevent, identify, and resolve whatever academic issue they may be experiencing.
Study Strategies
The amount of material and the pace of the curriculum can present difficulties for many medical students. Knowing how to study is a key component of success. Medical students also become familiar with the best practices for time management and self-care to augment the study strategies and resources available throughout the College of Medicine and the Office of Student Life.
Tutoring Services and Supplemental Instruction
The Learning Specialists oversee additional academic support programming as well. These include Supplemental Instruction and Group Anatomy Tutoring available to all students in Part One of the LSI curriculum. Meeting details for these groups will be shared throughout the academic year.
They also organize peer-led small group and one-on-one faculty-led tutoring. These opportunities are done through assignment only, so students interested in this support should reach out to Kim Doran for peer-led tutoring and Anne Hinze for faculty-led tutoring. You will find their contact information on the Our People page.
USMLE Preparation
Beginning in the first year, resource materials and information sessions are offered to ensure the successful completion of Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE). Step 1 and 2 exams are generally completed at the end of year two and the beginning of year 4, respectively. For more information about the USMLE, go to usmle.org.
