Directors' Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center. Biomedical Sciences is an umbrella program that includes all (basic science and clinical) departments in the College of Medicine at OSU. Our goal is to train talented students in interdisciplinary approaches to biomedical research by thinking critically and acquiring the proficiencies required for future success in the rapidly evolving fields within biomedical sciences.

Our Program is designed to allow graduate students to build a solid foundation for their professional life as an interdisciplinary researcher. An introductory program of study is required for all students, followed by an individualized curriculum and research plan designed for each student. This balance provides knowledge and experience in a number of different disciplines, yet supports the development of expertise in one area of research emphasis. Our program aims to strike a balance between the need to learn diverse aspects of biomedicine and the need to focus in a specialty to complete competitive dissertation research for the PhD.

Our first year curriculum has been revamped to streamline classroom work and introductions to laboratory techniques, and disperse students into research labs quickly to identify their primary mentors and dissertation research. We believe that this new curriculum will enable hard-working students to complete their PhD dissertation in four to five years without compromising quality. First year and second year classwork focuses on research problem-solving and includes courses on biostatistics, informatics, grant writing, and public speaking to enable our students to succeed in the current research climate. We have a very large inventory of research opportunities that includes over 270 laboratories available for research in a variety of disciplines at the OSU Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital campuses. Our students compete successfully for predoctoral fellowships, publish in high impact journals and graduate to continue their scientific training as postdoctoral fellows. Our past trainees have obtained faculty positions in academia, senior scientist positions in industry, and government scientist positions.

There are many ways to pursue a scientific career in biomedicine. Our program will provide you with an outstanding opportunity to achieve your goals. OSU is the largest university in the US, and if your research takes you in unexpected directions, we have the faculty to mentor you to become part of the biomedical scientist workforce and to make meaningful scientific discoveries. We welcome students of diverse scientific backgrounds who have the ambition to excel in biomedical research, both in basic and translational sciences. We also welcome students from under-represented backgrounds in the sciences.
