Created through the partnership of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, The Ohio State University College of Medicine and The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science, {rit} empowers the OSU research community to focus on the most difficult and impactful research agendas in the world by providing cutting-edge data collection, data science, design, development and informatics resources.

{rit}’s work increases:

  • Biomedical breakthroughs and research that translates into health care solutions
  • Extramural funding for health sciences research
  • Interdisciplinary biomedical research space and infrastructure capacity
  • Strategic partnerships within faculty research portfolios

Our Core Services

Research Informatics

Accessing Clinical Data to Support Faculty Research

Analysts on {rit}’s RI team who are trained in Epic’s data model offer data extraction services that support answering research questions.

  • De-identified or limited datasets through a HIPAA-compliant, IRB-approved Honest Broker process
  • Self-service data exploration tools including i2b2/ACT, Epic’s Slicer Dicer and SCARLET, provided with the Center for Clinical and Translational Science
  • Consultation on common data models including Epic’s Caboodle and Clarity
  • Support for research access to ACT’s SHRINE and Epic’s Cosmos networks

Secondary Data for Research

{rit} saves researchers’ time and resources by providing access to secondary data sources and metadata and data management services.

  • Access to national patient databases and surveys, as well as other secondary data sources
  • Data extraction, data linkage, harmonization and standardization to ensure the data can be verified and used for research

Electronic Data Capture

Within {rit}, the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) core consult with researchers on data collection tools for clinical and nonclinical research, including REDCap, Qualtrics, and EHR-to-EDC.

  • Support and training for self-service use of data capture, quality improvement, and workflow tracking tools
  • Full-service support for data collection tools, such as REDCap

Software Development

{rit} software engineers develop solutions that meet each research project's exacting specifications, avoiding the limitations and tradeoffs of off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all solutions. The RISE team is focused on meeting projects' unique needs, choosing the most efficient ways to extend existing platforms and develop purpose-built tools. We develop tools to integrate with databases and IHIS, on the medical center network or in the cloud. Our team of skilled professionals delivers products ranging from proofs of concept to enterprise-grade tools requiring 24/7/365 reliability with thousands of users.

  • Scalable webapps that can be reused for future projects
  • Off-the-shelf package software or customized software, depending on the research need

Design Services

UX experts on {rit}’s Research User Experience and Design (RUED) team transform a researcher’s vision of a service, website, or application into a usable, meaningful experience for end users, by collaborating with research stakeholders throughout the design process.

  • Discovery of problems you and your research participants face
  • Creating prototypes of solutions to specific to your research needs and end-users
  • Testing the impact of designed solutions to measure the utility, usability and desirability of a design

Data Science and Engineering

{rit} provides expert services covering the full range of data science workflows:

  • Services spanning data acquisition, ingestion, cleaning, management, reporting and visualization
  • High performance computing support for research, data science workflows and pipelines, data integration, and innovations in data science tool pipelines and interoperation

Mission

The Ohio State University Health Sciences campus provides a research technology infrastructure to support discovery as both an experimental and experiential laboratory to advance biomedical discovery.

Vision

Working in concert with researchers across our campus, our mission is to put technology in the effective service of conducting research at Ohio State to save and improve lives.

Our intention is no less than to transform how our research is supported and advanced by our infrastructure, increasing its quality, scale, flexibility and responsiveness. We aim to transform the relationship between IT and the research community, acting as a trusted partner to both. Finally, we will work to advance the operational and translational efficacy of our research through improving the practical efficacy of our IT infrastructure. All of our initiatives advance the medical center’s strategic plan:

  • Become a national leader in biomedical breakthroughs and translating research into health care solutions.
  • Significantly increase extramural funding for health sciences research.
  • Recruit and retain the nation’s best scientists and physician scientists.
  • Increase the quantity and quality of interdisciplinary biomedical research space and infrastructure.
  • Strengthen basic and translational research programs.
  • Build strategic partnerships to enhance the research portfolio.
  • Focus on Precision Medicine Research to pinpoint the molecular underpinnings of disease and spur the discovery of novel therapies.
