Specialty Training in Emergency Medicine
Ohio State’s Department of Emergency Medicine offers seven fellowship programs. We are committed to providing an environment that is both supportive and challenging, so that you can fulfill your highest potential and assume a position of leadership in emergency medicine. Below, you can find more information about each of our fellowship programs.
The OSU Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) fellowship is designed to provide intensive training in the research knowledge, quality improvement skills, administrative knowledge, and clinical care needed to incorporate holistic geriatric principles into the acute care of older patients. Fellows will work with fellowship faculty and our Department Chair to tailor a fellowship to their level of expertise (1-2 years) and focus (administrative, education, and research). For fellows who have already obtained an advanced degree (such as a person with an MD/PHD, MD/MBA, or significant prior training in education) a one year fellowship focused on gaining geriatrics expertise in their area would be considered, but we anticipate that most fellows will complete a 2 year fellowship with a graduate degree.
OSU is an optimal place to train fellows in GEM. The Department of EM has three NIH-funded investigators in GEM. We also have long standing research, educational, and administrative fellowships that have developed productive fellows with strong careers in EM. The Department has an accredited Level 1 Geriatric ED and close ties to the Division of Geriatrics, the Division of Palliative Medicine, and community resources. What can a GEM fellowship at OSU offer that other GEM fellowships do not already offer? We feel our specific experience in research, administration, and educational fellowships will allow future fellows to focus their training and their careers through:
- NIH-funded GEM research mentors (Research Track)
- Administrative training to become a GED Medical Director (Administrative Track)
- Training to incorporate GEM principles into EM residency programs (Education Track)
These programs will provide fellows with the education and training to become experts in their chosen areas of practice. While all trainees will get education in all three areas, a distinct focus will allow them to tailor their training to their career goals.
Applications are typically considered in the fall for fellowship years starting that spring. Off cycle applications are also considered, but please reach out and let us know in the fall. Fellowship slots are shared among the different programs and are often already allocated after the fall application cycle.
