About Surgical Education and Training
Surgical education and the training of medical students, residents, fellows and physicians in practice is an integral piece of our division’s academic endeavors. We strive to cultivate individuals with a passion for surgery, through one on one teaching opportunities, educational course series options and hands-on instruction in clinical and laboratory settings.
General Surgery Residency Program
The division offers a general surgery training program that includes five years of clinical training and one year of research or other advanced training, such as a critical care fellowship.
Master of Medical Science Program
The Master of Medical Science Program is designed for trainees interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine, to provide opportunity for promising clinically trained individuals to develop into independent biomedical academicians and to facilitate the transition from postdoctoral training to a career as an independent investigator and educator.
Fellowships and Advanced Training
The field of surgery is undergoing a revolution. New techniques and technologies consistently play a role in the standard of care for patients needing surgical procedures. We believe that the education of future surgeons must include advanced training in laparoscopic and endoscopic approaches for surgical treatment.
The Ohio State University Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery offers two types of advanced, one-year training programs – the Assistant Professorship in Advanced Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery (MIS) and the Assistant Professorship in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Surgery. Both programs have been fully accredited by the Fellowship Council.
Laparoscopic Skills and Fundamentals
The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS), Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) and Fundamentals Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) programs were designed for surgical residents, fellows and practicing physicians to learn and practice laparoscopic skills, as well as have the opportunity to measure and document those skills.
The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CMIS) offers multiple education modules and tools supported by SAGES.

Honors Program in Surgery
The Surgery Honors Program is a longitudinal elective that promotes additional education, research and leadership to exceptional students who are interested in careers in surgery. The Surgery Honors course is open to fourth-year students who have received overall honors or honors in surgery during their third year, and is through application only. Students selected for the program will advance their basic surgical techniques, gain an in-depth understanding of the major issues related to surgery and further develop their critical thinking skills. This will help students develop lifelong learning habits and experience the many facets of being an academic surgeon. A mentored, publishable research project is a requirement for the course as well.
