The field of surgery is undergoing a revolution. New techniques and technologies consistently play a role in the standard of care for patients needing surgical procedures. We believe that the education of future surgeons must include advanced training in laparoscopic and endoscopic approaches for surgical treatment.
The Ohio State University Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery offers two types of advanced, one-year training programs – in Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery (MIS) and in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Surgery. Both programs have been fully accredited by the Fellowship Council.
Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery
The Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery (MIS) training program at The Ohio State University is one of the oldest training programs in the country focused on minimally invasive surgery, established in 1996. Our MIS training program focuses on all aspects of minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery and is led by program directors Bradley Needleman, MD, and Kyle Perry, MD. Through this program, surgeons will gain extensive experience with laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, banding, laparoscopic hernia repair, minimally invasive treatment for reflux disease, as well as laparoscopic colon and solid organ removal. Additional training in endoscopic approaches for an increasing number of disease processes is also included in the curriculum. Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Surgery
Under the guidance of program director, Vimal Narula, MD, our advanced therapeutic endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery fellowship program offers specialized training in advanced therapeutic and interventional endoscopic procedures including Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), GI stenting, dilation, Stretta, Bravo probe placement, endoscopic cyst-gastrostomy and Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). Additional training in advanced laparoscopic procedures is also included in the curriculum.
