Providing the highest level of care
The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CMIS) at Ohio State is dedicated to the achievement of excellence in patient care, clinical training, research and outcomes studies pertaining to the techniques and technology of minimally invasive surgery.
The center was created in 1999 as part of the University’s mission to provide patients with the highest level of care. Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, our surgeons, nurses and support staff are committed to providing patients with all the benefits of minimally invasive surgery.
Our Functions
Patient Care
The center will further develop and maintain the highest level of efficient patient care, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and techniques in minimally invasive surgery. By providing this type of care, we intend to increase our market share through the development of new product lines, which will be disease specific units within the center. The center will provide the highest level of clinical training in all aspects of innovative technology and procedures.
Education
Structured programs in laparoscopic education will be provided to residents, fellows and medical students. In addition, courses will be offered to practicing physicians throughout the region to teach techniques in minimally invasive surgery. This is accomplished through a structured, didactic, practical and large animal laboratory experience.
Research
The center is continuing preliminary basic science research projects related to minimally invasive surgery. The expertise of basic and applied science researchers at Ohio State is drawn upon to develop interdisciplinary projects of mutual interest. The center offers seed grants to investigators for development of initial data to allow application for outside funding sources.
Outcomes
The Outcomes Studies Program is a cooperative effort between the CMIS and the Center for Health Outcomes, Policy and Evaluation Studies at Ohio State. The goals of the program are to monitor and improve the clinical processes, assist in administrative and external reporting requirements and to train individuals in outcome measurement and the use of outcomes in clinical decision making.
Our Administrative Structure and Governance
The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is comprised of Ohio State faculty who apply and are accepted as members. CMIS members are expected to support the mission of the center through their participation in research and educational programs. The center is governed by the executive committee of CMIS.
