Why Choose Ohio State for your residency?
The Departments of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine have demonstrated significant academic and educational excellence. Both departments are among national leaders in research funding and have enjoyed significant increases in research support during the past several years. Although internal medicine is one of the leading contributors to the education of our medical students, the Department of Emergency Medicine has contributed more teaching hours per faculty member than any other department. Both departments have had many faculty recognized for teaching excellence and many have been voted “professor of the year,” the highest recognition for teaching excellence from medical students. Both residency training programs continue to receive an increased number of highly qualified applications for residency training. Fellowship programs have also been added while continuing to emphasize the importance and vital role of providing primary care. Both residency programs have steadily increased their residency size as well as the expertise and numbers of their educational faculty. Both have a track record of excellence regarding residency review committee accreditation.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
The department’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) is a resident and faculty-led committee that strives to support, promote and improve the diversity within our department and medical center. Primary community outreach and engagement programs and initiatives driven by this committee include:
- Aligning with current medical center and community initiatives to address youth trauma and gun violence
- Giving back together through “ED Volunteers” group
- Supporting minority-owned businesses
- Creating impact pipelines for high school and undergraduate students
- Providing medical advice at monthly community outreach dinners
Supporting LGBTQIA+
Emergency Medicine Pride is our new LGBTQIA+ group at The Ohio State University Emergency Medicine. This organization was founded during the 2022-2023 academic year with the hopes of enhancing awareness and education around LGBTQIA+ EM Topics. So far, we have collaborated with LGBTQ+ and Allies in Medicine (Ohio State's LGBTQIA+ Medical student group), implemented new curriculum for EM residents, and added names of LGBTQIA+ providers to a database of The Ohio State University diverse faculty. We welcome new members and look forward to seeing the continued growth and progress of this organization!
Our department is proud to support women in Emergency Medicine. RAFFT (Resident and Faculty Females Together) is a robust, longitudinal curriculum and mentorship program for women in Emergency Medicine at all levels of training within our department. RAFFT was founded through the collaborative effort of residents and faculty to achieve the following goals:
- Create a platform for professional advancement, mentorship, and sponsorship
- Foster a community of empowerment
- Promote personal wellness and work-life balance
RAFFT has been featured on the national stage within the Emergency Medicine Education community. In each session we discuss topics related to gender equity and thriving as women in medicine, including: mentorship, leadership skills, negotiation and professional advancement, thriving clinically, supporting each other professionally, work-life balance, imposter syndrome, and many more. Each month we meet off campus (in person or virtually) for discussions that lead to tangible benefits in professional advancement, spark meaningful relationships, and create a culture of empowerment. Many sessions are organized by resident leaders who wish to bring their own topics and ideas to the community as well!
Through this program, we aim to be national leaders in advancement of women within Emergency Medicine. Any woman who strives to be a leader, advocate, or trailblazer will find an abundance of support at Ohio
