One-on-one patient-centered care
Family physicians provide patient-centered comprehensive and continuous primary health care to individuals and families regardless of age or disease. While other areas of medicine focus on particular body systems or diseases, family physicians specialize in one-on-one patient-centered care—getting to know a patient’s health, history, family background and lifestyle. This intimate understanding helps family physicians provide their patients with high quality care tailored to their needs, beliefs and preferences to encourage healthier, more satisfying lives.

In the Department of Family and Community Medicine, our behavioral health specialists play a very important role as members of the multidisciplinary care team. These individuals are available for scheduled counseling sessions and may sometimes be called upon to provide instant, integrated support as part of any visit with your primary care provider (PCP). Additionally, our behavioral health specialists can assist with accessing various resources within The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center or community that may aid in our patients’ quest for optimal health and wellness.
Since behavioral health plays such an important role in patients’ ability to manage chronic disease (i.e. diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart failure, etc.), it is critical to have adequate access to these healthcare professionals. Imbedding these individuals in the place where you receive your primary care not only enables better access to these services but allows the specialists to collaborate directly with your PCP to make the best decisions possible regarding your care.
