About our internal medicine education programs

The Ohio State University Department of Internal Medicine offers a dynamic learning environment for fellows, residents and students. The focus of our educational innovation effort includes verifying competency, emphasizing team work in mastering skills, transitioning care and linking educational and clinical quality improvement.

Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Ohio State University Department of Internal Medicine provides a unique learning experience for residents, stressing the importance of clinical excellence and dedication to scholarship. Our residents are encouraged to participate in faculty-mentored research experiences culminating in national and special local research day presentations. Our residency was selected one of the initial 17 Educational Innovation Project (EIP) programs in the nation asked to explore innovative strategies to train competent physicians in our discipline.

Our program is geared toward exposing our residents to realistic outpatient and inpatient rotations that facilitate career planning. We provide options for a regular categorical track, a primary care track, a Physician Scientist Training Program, a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency and an Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine combined residency.

Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Program

The Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics of The Ohio State University College of Medicine established a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Training Program in 1985. This four-year program trains residents in primary and specialty care medicine for patients of all ages. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Internal Medicine certifying examinations.

Our goal is to train highly skilled and compassionate professionals, and we provide an environment for those physicians to achieve this goal. The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center hospitals and Nationwide Children's Hospital serve the combined roles of urban community hospitals, indigent care providers and referral centers for central and Southeastern Ohio. Residents have carefully supervised and graded patient care responsibility in a variety of educational settings at these hospitals and in faculty-staffed ambulatory care offices.

Subspecialty Residencies and Fellowships

Our pride in educating the next generation of superb clinicians is reflected in the placement of our senior medical students in outstanding residency programs, including our own. Our residents who enter subspecialty training are equally successful in securing positions in prestigious fellowship programs. We are very pleased that many also chose to pursue fellowship programs within Ohio State.

Student Programs

Our student programs prepare internists to deal with whatever problem a patient brings no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex. They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic diseases and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time. They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness, disease prevention and the promotion of health.
