Endowments

black and white photo of Dr. Eli AlcornDr. Eli G. Alcorn and Dr. John B. Alcorn Prize in Ophthalmology was the first established endowment on December 14, 1925 with income to support a prize for medical students whose research in ophthalmology earned the highest grade, and graduate student and postdoctoral fellow clinical and basic science research in ophthalmology. The gift was for $9,700, which today is equal to $170,000+.

Establishing an endowment gives a gift with both immediate and long-term benefits. Endowed donations are invested and a portion of the annual income from the investment is used to address immediate needs of the department and the remaining funds are reinvested to ensure perpetual support for generations to come.
