About the Program

The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship training program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is a one-year intensive clinical program designed to comply with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements.

The fellowship also meets American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) requirements for board eligibility and certification in Transplant Hepatology. Ohio State's Transplant Hepatology Fellowship training program provides fellows with extensive inpatient and outpatient clinical experience as well as longitudinal didactic teaching. The program prepares fellows to:

  • Manage advanced liver disease
  • Be fully competent in transplant hepatology
  • Diagnose and manage complex hepatology issues

Program Details

Inpatient Training

Fellows spend four months in the inpatient Liver Transplantation Service. Responsibilities include:
  • Patient care
  • Performing procedures including liver biopsy and routine upper and lower endoscopy
  • Assisting in educating and supervising house staff

Outpatient Training

Fellows spend six months in supervised outpatient clinical activities in the Liver Transplant Clinic and the Liver Disease Consult Clinic. Fellows also participate in transplant observational activities and clinical research projects.


Fellows participate in a variety of ongoing or new clinical research projects related to liver disease or liver transplantation.

Application Process

We are accepting applications for the 2020-2021 academic year and beyond.

  • Completion of a three-year accredited fellowship in gastroenterology
  • Meet the requirements for board eligibility in gastroenterology at the time of commencement of the fellowship
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident or J-1 Visa status
  • Valid Ohio medical license by commencement of training
