Highlights from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Harding Hospital and the Center for Psychiatry and Resilience

Dear friends,

May Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. It gives all of us a valuable opportunity to celebrate the tremendous strides this nation has made in promoting mental health and increasing the public’s knowledge that effective services and support are available. For this spring’s newsletter we are highlighting our work in the areas of mental health equity and advocacy and invite you to join us in raising awareness and support for this important work.

Our purpose

Dr. K. Luan Phan working with a research participantAs the largest academic medical center in central Ohio, our mission is not only focused on providing clinical services but on education and clinical research as well. We want to explore the root causes of mental illness and addiction so that we can develop the next generation of treatments and cures. Our leaders are bringing together the best scientists and researchers so that we can intervene earlier in the disease process to build resilience and save lives. Learn more about Chair K. Luan Phan, MD, and his personal journey to finding his passion as a brain scientist.

Our community

Ohio State Harding Hospital held its Annual Mental Health Fair May 2-6 with many activities and programs. Community partners generously contributed to Buckeye Mental Health Bags, which contained a variety of mental health education and resource materials for Ohio State and medical center employees. Dedicated faculty and staff members combined forces on this webinar video, and participated on an Ask the Experts panel, which featured clinical experts from the full continuum of psychiatric care.
