The mission of the Medical Leadership Council is to engage current medical students to represent the College of Medicine and build connections with alumni, donors and friends. The council will be asked to represent their student body at various events and initiatives throughout the academic year. These opportunities will be on a first come, first serve basis allowing students to participate when they are available.

Goals of the Medical Leadership Council: 

  • Represent the medical student experience to alumni, donors and friends and serve as a representative of the student body to these external audiences
  • Promote and enhance relationships between current medical students and Ohio State medical alumni, donors and friends through various events and initiatives 
  • Connect current students to the college and the Medical Alumni Society 
  • Represent the current student experience to the Medical Alumni Society and identify unmet student needs to help the Medical Alumni Society support current students
  • Build student awareness of opportunities to remain connected to the college after graduation

Responsibilities of the Medical Leadership Council:

  • Build a network of professional contacts and gain leadership skills
  • Attend alumni dinners, receptions and reunion events
  • Guide alumni on tours of the medical center campus
  • Enhance communication skills through conversations with Ohio State's diverse alumni population

Med 1 students will have the opportunity to submit an application to become a council member.  Applications will be reviewed by the College of Medicine Alumni Office, and 12 students will be selected to represent their class. These students must commit to serving as a council member for all four years and are required to do the following:

  • Required to attend at least three alumni events a year (fall and spring) as coordinated by the College of Medicine Alumni Office
  • Provide additional participation at alumni events as needed (i.e. planning, coordinating, advertising, speaking roles during events, etc.)
  • Communicate with student body about events
  • Assist with promotion of the Medical Alumni Society Grant proposals (August and February)
  • Provide feedback to the Alumni Office on opportunities to improve student-alumni engagement

Beginning January 2024, applications to join the Medical Leadership Council Executive Committee will also be opened. This subgroup of the MLC is responsible for the strategic planning of the council and works closely with the Alumni Office staff. Applicants will need to provide an additional 1-4 hours per week to meet this time commitment.
